Using 1 NIC for router

While working on Raggedy_Hobos design, I decided to set up a W2K network. It works fine, but while setting it up I ran into an interesting networking question!!

I was setting a W2k Professional up to be a router and have run into something that defies logic (at least to me).

First I set the following registry entry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip \Parameters

Setting the "IPEnableRouter" entry (by defining as value : 1 )

Here are my 2 networks: 192.168.120.0 and 192.168.122.0

My 3 machines are:

Allosaurs (The W2K Router): W2K Professional, 1 NIC set up as such:

IP Address: 192.168.120.11
Subnet: 255.255.255.0
IP Address: 192.168.122.11
Subnet: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 192.168.122.1 The Linksys router.

Trilobyte: W2k Professional, 1 NIC set up as such:

IP Address 192.168.122.7
Subnet: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 192.168.122.1 My Linksys router.

Satellite: Windows 98, 1 Nic set up as such:

IP Address: 192.168.120.5
Subnet: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 192.168.120.11

This works fine, now as it is set up above. Everything can ping everything, including the internet.

If I take the gateway away from the Satellite machine, Trilobyte can't ping Satellite, which makes sense. Satellite can't ping Trilobyte or the 2nd NIC in Allosaurus (192.168.122.11) or the Linksys router (192.168.122.1), which is Destination unreachable. This also makes sense.

This doesn't.

If I make the Satellite gateway 192.168.122.1, I can ping the Linksys router?????

The setup on Satellite for this test is:

IP Address: 192.168.120.5
Subnet: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 192.168.122.1

The gateway is on the other network and gateway should not be reachable. And if it is, it should have been reachable when I had no gateway.

Why does it work here?

Anyone, know why?

I would think both scenarios would fail.
