Option One: Downgrade It to Windows XP :D! just kidding... or maybe not!

If I am right, the password protection feature is for file sharing, it would disable asking remote users for username and password.

windows firewall is off! do you have Internet Security solution from other vendors? like panda, kaspersky, McAfee or some other? these could also disable incoming ping echo packets. so please check if there is other vendor Internet Security, and enable fiel and print sharing in it, hope you don't have Norton Symantec, do you?

double check your workgroup name a slight different with mistyping could lead to such problem.

Try such settings in Vista Network and Sharing Center:

Network Discovery: on
Network set to: Private
File Sharing: on
Public Folder Sharing: on
Password Protected: off

if nothing works Option one is still accessible;-)

good luck
