Let me see if I can define your problem better:

You have a Dell Inspiron Laptop.

In order to run the labtop on a battery you have to:

1.) Turn it off
2.) Unplug the power supply
3.) Turn it on again.

When running on the battery the antivirus (Avast 5.0) "disappears from the system".

Going to need more details on this issue.

Does the directory that holds the antivirus still exist when it's gone?

Is Avast5.0 the only thing that goes away when you reboot?

Is your Antivirus fully updated?

What are your power save settings?
