SATA-II Controller question

Hi All,

I am currently upgrading my HDD's and I am thinking about plugging in 2x 500/750gb SATA-II drives for a RAID-1 Configuration (Mirrored) for some fault tolerance.

Ofcourse there is also Raid-5/6 etc.. but for this RAID-1 would be more then fine.

The issue I am currently wrestling with is speed (read/write).

I have a 'standard' mainboard with 8 SATA connections possible.

My question is,

are all these SATA data channeled towards 1 controller, or does every SATA connection have it's own controller ?

In case all SATA connections are managed by 1 controller, would it be a wise choice to purchase an additional controller for performance?

Thanks

umm... not sure about that but i doubt it would make a noticable difference. Check under device manager to see how many controllers show up, might help :).

I just checked mine and my main PC is showing as having 2 serial ATA controllers and i have 4 serial ATA ports however 2 are black and 2 are red so i'm assuming its 1 colour per controller, (dual channel type config). you should be able to figure out something similar on your computer, go to device manager and see how many controllers show up they're under IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers.

Hope this helps you out :)

Good one!
Found out I have 4 SATA controllers, all red-labeled on my mainboard.

Prolly 0+1 2+3 4+5 6+7...
I guess i can sort it out from here :).
