Reverse NAT functionality question.

Hi,
I am currently doing the configuration for a SYmbol Wireless Switch. When I was configuring the firewall rules for each segment, I noticed that there is an option to specify reverse NAT. My question is: What is the real functionality of reverse NAT?

In the configuration you can specify the IP address and the port address for the reverse NAT. If I am not wrong it means that when the outside network traffic enters to the switch I can redirect it to specific private Ip address and also maps it to a translated port number.

It confuse me a little because it is the same thing when you configre PAT (Port Address Tranlation) on any other router equipment. Does anyone can tell me if I am wrong?

According to my view reverse NAT is used to provide some services to your clients out side to your organization. But it leads to a security problem. It is avoided to use stat full firewall after NAT device.

I know this is in response to an older thread, but I felt like posting anyway. Yes, you are correct that your device's Reverse NAT function basically the same as a router's PAT function (although I do not know if your Symbol device will translate ports as well as network addresses).

Reverse NAT definately has it's use in the corporate environment. For example, if you had many external clients connecting to a server via IP address (not using DNS), you could actually change the server's IP address without needing to reconfigure each client by simply natting the incoming connections to the server's new IP.

Though I know how NAT works, I simply dont understand how translating is done trhough a reverse NAT? How can it be implemented?

How can you use a proxy server behind a NAT router most specially for SOHO devices?
