EGP/BGP Clearification

In my book it states that EGP was basically replaced with BGP as the only exterior gateway protocol. I'm wondering why did they make the change? What does BGP do that EGP can't?

edit:

(current self reading on subject: homepages.uel.ac.uk/u0225867/website/egp_bgp.htm )

Now I'm more confused then ever.. bgp transmits complete routing information instead of partial information?

(quote from website)

How can BGP afford to transmit "complete routing information" and what comprizes "complete routing information", an entire routing table? Does that mean large bgp networks are trading entire routing tables?
