You can remove a cisco switch out of the box and place it on a network without any configuration, can i do that with cisco routers if I just want to supply internet services to just fifty systems if not what config are needed.

No - a router will need configuration of the interfaces' IP Addresses and the routing protocol at least. Additional configuration will include passwords and access lists for security.

Stevep is correct. You will need to apply at least the basic configuration which involves IP addresses for the necessary interfaces, default gateway, access lists and a few more depending on the network configuration and role of the router.

If ur plugging in a out of box cisco switch(second hand) make sure ur VTP database is flushed out or else it creates hell lot of problem if higher revision numbers are present.
