The Pain of a Linux Newbie..

Despite the "pain" of moving to linux I am enjoying the experiance.

If I could only get my WLAN stick to work, I'd be in heaven.

I think my problems aren't really related to the drivers, but just not really quite understanding the process. At lease when I have cracked it I should be able to fix it in my sleep....but probably won't have to!

My wife is already converted without using it. It looks nicer!

I'm pretty sure I will go with Knoppix HD install as I like debian, and just found the hardware detection in knoppix great.

And it comes with all the fun little network tools I can't wait to use!

(I hope sahir is ready for question 3 -4 weeks from now)

Knoppix H/W detection is the best.. hands-down. It is without competition..

I'm actually seriously surprised when hardware doesn't come up under it.

Alls well & working as of last night.

In the end I didn't use Knoppix, but Kanotix which is based on Knoppix. The main difference seems to be Kanotix is already using debian SID packages rather then woody.

USB wlan0 working well via ndiswrapper - no matter how hard I tried with wlan-ng I just couldn't get it to work. nevermind.

Now playtime can really begin!

It really depends on what you will do with you Linux... If it's only for testing, go for a Virtual PC but if you plan to use it in a production environment go for a 'real' install on your physical PC.
