And don't forget that when they aggregate all these servers into one virtual infrstructure the network traffic to that box actually increases and becomes more mission-critical. Plus, having put all their eggs in one basket they then have to introduce resilient systems and that in turn means they need resilient and robust networks. The world will always need network engineers...

You can bundle the physical uplink ports into a LAG and provide physical redundancy that way. Using a stacked switch or modular switch will provide port redundancy by using diverse ports. There's no STP because there is no way to directly connect two vSwitches together.

If you put the whole internet in an extremely powerful super duper ultra cyber indestructible god sent virtual machine. You would still need to physically connect it to each and every home/business via .....

physical wires. So you will again still need real switches and routers in between.
