Are you wedded to using an Server as a Firewall?

Personally, in your case, I would just get a commodity firewall. Linksys has one, which I have used and seems to work fine and cost about $70. Other companies have similar ones for about the same price.

I use Sonicwall myself, but it costs a little more (about $400 - more if you want the VPN option).

In your case, I would probably start with this, to get your machines protected and then play with the Linksys at your leisure.

Thanks,

Tom

You could try CheckPoint. I'm not sure what your budget is like, but its a very good firewall to cut your teeth on.

I assumed you're talking about a full fledged firewall as a gateway, not a personal firewall.

I'd add sonicwall to the list.

I'm curious as to the costs of the others on the list? I know the Pix is pretty expensive.

Thanks,

PIX is expensive cause its an actual hardware box, really neat looking too :)

I think you can pick up a PIX 501 firewall for around 400 - 500 dollars.. not sure though.

CheckPoint sells you a license for whichever modules you want to use (wonderful marketting tactic) therefore depending on what functionality you use, you pay only that amount. Payment is accepted by the preferred method in IT -- through your nose
