Would this be a good starter kit to learn with ?
Also with this could you use the 1601 router's ethernet to connect to dsl or cable internet? then use the serial port on the 1601 router to connect to the serial port on the 2500 router and have a switch connected to the ethernet port on the 2500 for ineternet access?

Well, still only learning myself but i think this is correct;

Yes the kit seems like it will help to do CCNA but to do CCNP i think you will probably need a couple more routers to fully setup routing protocols effectively.

As for the question about plugging it into the Internet, you will not be able to use it for ADSL because it doesn't have an ADSL WAN interface, as for cable, i am not sure. I think you can because the ethernet interface will just plug into the Cable box but i have never used cable so don't quote me on that.

Cheers

Surely your ADSL will have an RJ11 jack which is the US Phone Socket Connector. That said, it was pointed out that the RJ11 (US Telephone Jack) and RJ45 (UTP Network Jack) do actually fit in the same sockets, its just they seem to be wired up differently ?

Take a look at this topic where we had this dicussion http://www.firewall.cx/ftopict-3680.html

Sounds like you have an ADSL Router then if you are plugging into your ethernet port on your computer. If thats the case you could plug the Cisco router in if you wanted to.
