Just to summarise what's been said, freenet. If your IP addresses will only be in use in a local network, you can choose any IP address of the form xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx, where xxx is a number from 0-255.

This is however not usually regarded as good practice and even if if there is no likelihood of future internet connectivity, best practice dictates that you to use an IP from one of the private ranges defined in RF 1918 .

Then if your ISP issues you with a public IP address, you can apply that to the external interface of your router/firewall and continue to use your private IP range behind the router/firewall.

You must also take into account whether or not you are speaking in terms of your own private network or a network (LAN) of sorts, run by others. If that is the case then you must comply with the ip scheme and masking set forth by those who run the network.

A scapegoat is often as welcome as a solution...never memorize what you can look up.
