Guys,

I think it was in one of the forums here but i cant find it now. Someone mentioned a linux firewall called Astra ? Or something like it. I had a look at it's web page and it looks like it would be able to run a VPN from my home into work.

Cheers

You're talking about Astaro Security Solutions.
www.astaro.com/

The firewall suite is called Astaro Security Linux.
www.astaro.com/php/statics.php?action=asl&lang=gb

It's stateful inspect and supports NAT, masq, HTTP/FTP/SMTP application proxies, IPSEC and PPTP VPN and RAS. Also has built in virus and spam protection.

Comes with its own hardened OS

Its about $350 for a 10 IP license with 1 year up2date subscription.

If you're planning on using it purely as a VPN endpoint.. you're probably wasting a whole lot of its features.

Thanks for that. I wasnt aware that you had to pay for it. i was looking got a distro that would allow me to get into linux routing and also look at firewalling my network and looking after the VPN as well.

Would IP cop be worth a look?

Cheers

Just a note on the cost. You can get it free for personal ab/use.

If you just want to look into general firewalling and routing, then hit the iptables man pages in just about any linux distro after installing the iptables package (if its not installed by default)

If you can write good rules in iptables, you can write good rules anywhere.

Dunno bout VPN endpoint though..
