As Chris said Microsoft firewalls out ICMP messages as well as traceroute so that people cannot map their network.

It is interesting that you get a 'destination net unreachable'. I usually get this

[code:1]
C:\WINDOWS>ping www.microsoft.com

Pinging www2.microsoft.akadns.net [207.46.156.188] with 32 bytes of data:

Request timed out.
Request timed out.
Request timed out.
Request timed out.

Ping statistics for 207.46.156.188:
Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 0, Lost = 4 (100% loss),
[/code:1]

Hi.
Thanks for the replies :)

I have allowed ALL the ICMP traffic ( not only the replies ) to come
through ( ofcourse only for this moment ) but I still get the same reply even from google :(

I used some scanner to ping www.microsoft.com and the result was that 3/5 ( or if used 3 requests , 2/3 ) pings were successfull but on traceroute I received 'Destination net unreachable' !!!

I even stopped the firewall but still no succes.
google and some other sitees were the same too ( well i even tried your own site but no success ;) )

Any idea?

PS : I'm still able to browse the internet.

Some ISP's block ICMP.. i don't know why.. but I know that the provider we use at work doesnt allow echo replies.. its really irritating, I can't ping my home machine to see if its up or not.

Hai Dmix,

I read your problem. Are you solved that problem. Are you checked your proxy server settings in your system. It is located in Tolls, Internet options, connections, LAN settings. I think it will solve your problem.

Replied by Arani on topic issues with pinging
hello ice,
try turning on nslookup and look for all the available servers for microsoft web services. you will be shown a batch of IP addresses for normal services, and for mail etc, try pinging all of them one by one. if all come up with the same destination unreacheable response, then you will have to take it as microsoft block ICMP replies. so even if you have echoes from ICMP enabled from your machine, the same is disabled on the servers at microsoft. apart from that, its not a major issue that you are not able to ping microsoft servers, they are paranoid people on this planet!!!
