In my BTEC ND i have been asked to research IP Mapping. Im not sure if this is just a different name for something else, but i can't seem to find anything defining on the internet about it. If anyone has a link to a source of information i would greatly appreciate it.

Many thanks.

DS~

What kind of IP mapping do you need to know about? Is this in relation to ARP entries, DNS, or something else?

I guess he is talking about IP Mapping as in Network Address Translation (NAT).

You can find a lot of information about NAT on this website itself so you dont have to go anywhere...

IP Mapping, is a more common term so you would find diffrent versions !

As far I know
IP Mapping is used in many places Like...

DNS -> Maps Domain Name to IP
ARP -> Maps Mac Address to IP
Inverse ARP -> Maps Framerelay DLCI to IP.

and there are many other I guess...

Darksatan can you elobrate waht exactky you need.
Cheers,

Thanks for the help so far guys, i appreciate it.

To elaborate more i'll copy and paste the question.
P7 Describe what is meant by IP mapping and name resolution
Mapping – the identifying and resolution of one computer node to another.

It looks like it is a poorly stated question - so i may just do brief descriptions of what you guys put above. If anyone can work out what this means, please let me know.

Thanks again.

P7 Describe what is meant by IP mapping and name resolution

This sounds like Domain Name resolution to me (DNS).
Mapping – the identifying and resolution of one computer node to another.

This sounds like Network Address Translation (NAT).

So you probably have to study about NAT & DNS.

Hope others can help too...
