type enable at the prompt. I am prompted for a password. I type cisco and it's a no go.

Initially the lab equipment should be completely set to the inital defaults so you shouldn't need to enter cisco as a password. When you set the password as part of your lab, we ask that you only set it to 'cisco' as that enables the auto-cleardown scripts to log in to the kit after you have finished to reset the lab for the next user.
If you are finding that you can't log in right at the start of your lab then this means some previous user did not follow these instructions, for which we can only apologise. To reset the lab under these circumstances requires physical access to the kit so only Chris can do it; I'm sure after reading this post he will be going to have a look to check all is well
