Starting with Windows 98A, Internet Explorer has been an intricate part of the shell and it would be impossible to remove it. You could delete the shortcuts and icons for IE so it’s not on your desktop or Program tree but that’s about all.

You dont need to uninstall Internet Explorer to install Firefox.. getting IE out of XP is possible.. but its a bit like doing open-heart surgery with a chainsaw and a hammer.. in other words, don't do it...

Just install firefox, and make it your default browser.. that will ensure that IE is never called to handle URIs of any kind, and you'll be spared the embarassment of porn popups when you're trying to teach your mother in law how to check her email.

Enough is enough, show Microsoft that you give a damn about quality by switching to standards compliant, open source alternatives.

regarding updating your system with all the patches and such, how do you know for sure if they won't increase security risks?
You always here about some patches that actually make you even more vulnerable. Was just wondering what your guys opinions are when updating.
Keep in mind this is for my windows box, so switching to Linux is not a solution, I already have Linux boxes running. Those are the puters that don't give me problems. :D

updating your MS system is a good thing. these patches are done based on the number of error reports given to micorsoft. this is the error reporting tool of windows that pops up everytime your systems detects a sudden failure or crash. the patches are made based on the availability and the number of cases that the same report are received. if it is massive and immediate, a patch is readily available overnight. some are available over the week and so on...these patches i believe improves your system more rather than compromise it. these patches are very well engineered to help fix out bugs within the MS system. moreover if these patches does not work for you, you could simply perform a rollover so that it would come back to its previous state. this was design by microsoft it self to help its clients on their windows environments and platforms..
