Move files keep shares

I added some new drives to an existing dell server. The new partition is setup and ready. I need to move the data from one partition to another. The only problem with that would be is I would loose all the network shares setup. Is there any way around this?

nnbnbfound an article which describes how you can move the shares from one machine to another. www.windowsitpro.com/Article/ArticleID/15161/15161.html?Ad=1 . Worth a quick look at.

Looking at the above link, i think you could do the following

I HAVE NOT TESTED THIS SO PLEASE TEST ON A NONE PRODUCTION MACHINE BEFORE DOING IT

The following key

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanServer\Shares

is responsible for the shares, if you move all the data across to the new drive, you could then export this machine key to a .reg file. Then you can use notepad to do a search and replace to get the new drive (and path if you move the root path).

Remove the full key and then double click the modified .reg file. You will then need to reboot.

PLEASE DO TEST THIS BEFORE YOU ATTEMPT IT ON YOUR LIVE SERVERS.

Please let the group know if it works.

It works sweet. Ill just use XCOPY to copy permissions to the new drive.

I used google to try and find this I coulden't find anything. What keywords did you use for your search?

Googled for "Move windows shares"

Glad it works, did forget to warn about the default administrative shares to make sure you didn't change them. I have just booted my test Windows 2003 server up at home to give it a try for ya. Saves me a job now

Cheers

The best way for moving shares and NTFS security information is Secure Copy. I have no of negative remarks about this product over the past 2 years of use.
