Being IT in 1000+ uer company

Hi everyone,
There ar some companys with huge staff like 100, 1000,...
I'm asking how a "IT" can manage all this users? I mean just
for daily problems like "I don't have internt!", a mouse not working, windows will not startup....etc,
how IT person can handle all these problems?
Also for maintenance stuffs, how he can maintain 1000 pc??
I'm not working in abig staff company but i just want to know.

with service desk systems which integrate very well on IT infrastructure.

These are layered services.

with call centers etc etc....

I have found that typically in a large (250+) company IT is never handled well. Unless you are in an IT or IT-ish company they look at IT as a burdon. Where at an IT company its viewed as a way to make thing better/easier. When your whole department is looked at as an expense that can be cut to pad the bottem line.. Things are going to go wrong.

Big companies that do it 'right' break IT up into sub-departments. Network, database, systems, developers, a help desk. Even if each sub-dept. is only 1 person, letting them consentrate on that subject is going to make them stronger and more focused. People's knowledge still crosses over. But its nothing like the shops where everyone is expected to know everything and do everything.

A real good way to look at the situation is to find a company that got big after they started having greater and greater IT needs. And compare them to a company that was large before there IT needs grew.

And of course... IT and non-IT companies.. big seporation can occure there too.

This is the deal at my company. They aren't giving raises and aren't hiring more staff to help with the workload, just to save some money.

Usually, all issues in a company are reported to the help desk, who sends the issues over to the appropriate sub-departments that toddwoo listed above. Usually, a ticket tracking system is used to record who submitted the issue, who will fix it, etc. Depending on how much staff is in the IT dept will determine what the turn around time to get issues fixed.

Completely agree. I've been trying to get our "team" broken up into separate disciplines for years now but am constantly thwarted by a manager who only sees a reduction in his direct reports and therefore in his managerial prestige. Specialism works much better - it produces higher quality results from more satisfied and motivated people
