Hi Folks,

I'm after a bit of sage advice and hopefully someone out there can help.

I was asked to look at a PC problem last night that caused me an issue or two. A brief outline of the problem is shown below:

The machine is a Dell running XP. I was told by the user that he was trying to logon using the Administrator account, but it appeared not to be working (he couldn't logon). I asked if the password had been changed, and he was not aware that it had. I asked him for the details of another user with Admin rights, so we could logon and check this issue. He told me that there was no other user with admin rights, only guest accounts Doh! :shock:

I tried removing all the power from the PC and removing the cmos battery, in the hope this would reset the machine to its defaults, but this didn't work.

So, I'm at a loss as to how to deal with this. Can anyone help, or shed some light on this?

There is a boot CD that you can get which will reset the password for you. Cannot remember what it is called though. If no-one else posts i will track it down when i get home.

I have just spent 30mins going through past posts because i am sure there is a thread on this and i posted the tools name, cannot blinking find it though ?

You can reset the password using this bootdisk free tool here:

I've tried it many times and it works.
