you could try setting up a windows server by picking the server of choice and then making your way from ground up. then after setting it up you are given the task of deciding what to do with your server. What roles would it be doing (Domain Controller?, Proxy Server?, File and Print Server?, Email Server?, etc...). It is really up to you if you want the server to perform a specific task or you could setup the server with all the roles upon its shoulders.
to get you off, first decide on one specific subject that you would like to do then start your way from there. If you decide to make a Web Server, start from there and then make research (google, etc.) on the subject and then try to apply what you have learned on your windows server box. I suggest that you use VMware for testing purposes as it mimics the actual environment of a physical PC.
well, the possibilities are endless and the list just goes on and on so if you have any questions or if you find my post confusing (as i got confused myself ) then just post them here as there are alot of people here willing to share their expertise on the subject.
hope that you could get something from this post...
If your able to get your hands on an older server hands on setting up servers is the best way to learn. I picked up a pretty nice server on ebay for about $365 bucks that I am practicing and learning to use server applications with. The system I got was a bit more then you probably need, but I plan on putting that server to use here very soon.
Its an IBM Netfinity 7000M10
-Quad 450Mhz PII Processors
-Quad 36gig SCSI 10,000rpm on RAID5(hot swappable)
-8gigs of RAM(some older type of RAM)
-Server weights in a wopping 153lbs
I think they have a few other servers similiar to those specs if your interested. Im a total gEEk and I just had to have that server. But my recommendation is to get yourself a old server and do hands on, best way to learn.
