is there any way of retrieving outlook data from a hard drive if it's not backed up to a pst file?

Outlook automatically saves it as a .pst file. Browse to this path:

C:\Documents and Settings\User\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook

Replace "User" above with your own user name. The file name is "Outlook.pst". You might also find "archive.pst"
