Hi All,

Foxed by a modem of all things...

My new place doesn't have broadband yet so I thought I'd use my PCs modem - hoping to bring back happy memories of simpler times.

Unfortunately I can't get the modem to detect dial tone.

I've tried the obvious:

1) Cables are ok.

2) ISP modems can be called from the phone (confirming number is correct)

3) Reinstalled drivers

4)No conflicts in Device Manager

5) Makes no difference is modem is set to wait for dial tone or Not. If set to wait for dial tone it tells me there is no dial tone. If set to dial anyway then it dials and nothing happens.

6) tore what little hair I have out

My setup is an IBM X31 with internal modem -
Agere Modem ver 2.1.31
Vendor ID 8086
Device ID 24C6

As nothing happens when I tell the modem to dial with out waiting for dial tone I am not convinced the modem is even trying to sieze the line..

Help!

I have only ever seen this if;

1. The telephone cable from the Modem to the socket, isn't the original cable. Sometimes the Modem uses different pin locations than other manufacturers.

2. Its been a while so appologies if this is incorrect but i seem to remember some telephone systems in offices using 4 wires instead of the conventional 2 wires. I am fairly sure this sometimes caused an issue.

3.Also, i think some NTL telephones (in the Uk) had some issues with the way modems detected dial tones because NTL sent a different tone, again this is from memory which is a long time ago.

Cheers

I've had this once on a work site; it was something funny about the modem just not liking the way the PBX presented the line. Bank of four identical modems, three worked and one wouldn't. In the end I had to swap it. So it might be a silly suggestion, but have you confirmed the modem works okay when connected to a different phone line (with the same cable) somewhere else? That would at least show where the problem really lies

Thanks for the comments...

I guess I really need the time to plug into a different line with a different cable.

The NTL issue was one that caused me grief as I was working for the supplier that sold NTL the exchange with the odd dial tone. The problem took far too long to solve as was the result of disjointed R&D.

Painful!
