Picking a linux distro all depends on what you want to do with it(or lack thereof in the context of installation) and how advanced you are. LFS is a great way to learn the technical aspects of how a linux system operates beyond what it normally shows, but that usually sacrifices user friendlieness so you have to choose your poison essentially.
I, like nske, suggest Gentoo if you want a powerful linux installation with THE best package system(sorry freeBSD port tree  ) and extremely customizable. It, like LFS, recommends some experience with a linux distro as the installation and maintenence process is not just a click away like red hat and what not. If in doubt, try them all.
