hi guys i have a question about autonegotiation

with autonegotiation on 10/100 card, what characteristics if the device on the other end does not perform negotiation at all?

a- 100 Mbps, half duplex
b- 100 Mbps, full duplex
c- 10 Mbps ,half duplex
d- 10 Mbps ,full duplex

the answer was "C" in the cisco press BOOK
but i dont understand why

and what is the mean of "does not perform negotiation at all" is the mean a 10 Mbps card or (100 mbps only not 10/100) or it mean its a 10 Mbps half duplex card. iam realy confused.

thanx

I'll answer the second question first as it leads us to the answer.

If the device at the other end does not perform negotiation at all, it could be for any number of reasons:

1. It is not capable of auto-negotiation
2. Auto-negotiation is disabled

All this means is that we don't know what modes the device is capable of operating as we can't negotiate. It could be a 10Mbps or gigabit device for all we know.

That is why we have to choose the lowest common denominator which is 10 Mbps half duplex, as all devices from 10Mbps onwards can operate in this mode.
