A normal L2 switch can NOT work as a L3 switch. However, a L3 switch can work as both L2 or L3 switch.

For example, if you have a Cisco L3 switch such as the 3550, you can enable/disable L3 switching using the ip routing / no ip routing command.

The switches that support L3 are so called MLS (Multi Layer Switches).

Also your IOS is of importance if your switch can support routing protocols.

You can check the feature navigator of cisco for your switch type.
