Hi,

I switched ISP recently. I now have a spare router.

At the moment my home network is one big network split across two distinct areas of our house. The two are linked via a homeplug.

Is there any way I can use the spare router to restrict the traffic in one area of the house from the other?

Regards,
Mark.

I assume you mean an ADSL router? If so, this is essentially a switch on the front of a digital modem. These switches are not as intelligent as Cisco (or many other) switches so I doubt it will support anything other than switching on a LAN.

I might be wrong though

Hi SteveP - thanks for replying.

Yes an ADSL modem is what it has. Also four ethernet ports.

That's an insight I wasn't aware of. Everyone seems to call these things routers without qualification.

My spare device is a Draytek Vigor 2600 Plus.

I had a look around its configuration, there's heaps of stuff in there, and that's partly what aroused my curiosity.

It has a routing table configuration. Does this mean it can route IP traffic and therefore allow me to create a second network?

Mark.
