Windows XP uses APIPA (automatic private IP addressing) from the range 169.254.0.1 - 169.254.255.254

Very simple to understand requiring no configuration, when used in a small workgroup.

For domains and more complex networks, you really need 2000 server for this function.

i set ICS at my win xp so another user can connect to internet thru this computer..using cross cable, i plug a laptop(also using winXP) to the pc. ...at pc i use fix ip 192.168.0.1 and at laptop i use DHCP...then i use ipconfig in command promt..the laptop automatically grab ip..the ip display at the laptop is 192.168.0.73...so, in this case, winXP also can give DHCP services..is it true? please advise..correct me if i;m wrong..

Sure, you can install any unix-like OS, such as liinux, freebsd, openbsd, in any pc even your old 386, and run dhcpd as it is a fairly simple and light service. I would recommend -as always :D- slackware linux. The only thing is that it might take you a while to get used to the operating system if you haven't used unix before.

PS. that microsoft url has screwed the layout :P
