TOPIC: Win98 firewall not sharing internet to XP machine

Win98 firewall not sharing internet to XP machine 12 years 5 months ago #4083

I have two computers daisy-chained behind a router, and am having trouble getting the second computer to connect to the internet.

The hardware setup is:
Router -> Win98 -> WinXP (later possibly a hub)

ICS is "seemingly" correctly installed on the Win98 machine, and this unit can access the net without trouble. The XP machine can ping the Win98 machine, but cannot ping through to the router, and correspondingly has no internet access. Firewalls are deactivated.

I have the following settings for the network cards:

Win98 Networking setup
Realtek card -> Router
Fixed IP : 192.168.2.x
Subnet : 255.255.255.0
DNS : 192.168.2.1 (router)
Gateway : 192.168.2.1

Sitecom card -> Internal network
Fixed IP : 192.168.254.1
Subnet : 255.255.255.0

WinXP Networking setup
Sitecom card
Fixed IP : 192.168.254.2
Subnet : 255.255.255.0
DNS : 192.168.254.1
Gateway : 192.168.254.1

I would appreciate any help that can be given - I'm sure there is something red and shiny which I've overlooked :)

Thanks, Chris

I'm not a windows expert but I think youve got the cart in front of the horse. I dont know how you've setup ICS with Win98 as the gateway system.

in other words your setup should be

router --> WinXP --> Win98

I dont think Win98 has the routing and forwarding subsystem required to be the gateway, it can be a client.

What you need to do is

Setup ICS on XP.. you should get a new network connection called 'shared internet connection' or similar.

Then setup the 98 box to use DHCP..

Everything will work.
