TOPIC: Connectivity witout default gateway.

Connectivity witout default gateway. 9 years 5 months ago #22437

Hi Can anyone suggest on this. Last week I had been to a place and observed that the default gateway was not specified and still we were able to browse. But I suppose that traffic was going through the Proxy which was set in the IE. But what confused me was other applications too was working fine without explicitily specifying the default gateway !!!! Could some one tell me how thr traffic knows the path to take when no default gateway has been specified.

Hmm, just a few things first;

1. What do you mean by other applications ? Are these internal applications such as e-mail services, etc... ?

2. Did you check the routing table ?

Oops!! I forgot to specify that. The application was Skype which was installed by me and hence Iam sure no proxy was set. If the PC doesnt know where to sent the traffic then how would this application work?

I have not looked the routing table. Is it a nice idea to add a default gateway via "route add" command?

Hi there,

Its best to add a default gateway through the TCP/IP properties. If however you have several subnets within your organisation, you may add then seperately using the route add. Most people would just use the default gateway.

I have never used Skype but you may find that it checks your IE proxy settings and will use the proxy server which is why this is working.
