So I dont know a whole lot about switches....but im suppose to check out a few for a client (who used to have a procurve 4000) for the place I work at and then they need to be approved by my boss and then they will be checked out/bought by a client. Since I'm not all that experienced I thought I better turn to some people who are. Anyway the client needs these features:

1. Expandability
2. Must be a managed switch
3. Need Giga bit on some ports, 6 would be nice
4. PoE (I think hes
5. Ability to Fiber optic
6. VoIP with packet priority
7. Minimum of 48 ports / preferred 96

Prices arent all that important...something under 8K would be nice.

Thanks for any help,
Cody

Since it seems that you need an enterprise solution i would recommend checking cisco switches first. If you need more help on deciding on which switch to recommend, don't hesitate to ask
Cheers

This should give you a good idea of how much I know about switches.

First what is 1000base-LX & SX and what is fiber used for? My guess is for uplinking other switches but I really have no idea.

This may be a new topic but I thought I would post it here anyway.

Thanks,
Cody

Hi,

Specs seem to be pretty manageable.

From my experiance I'd recommend avoiding 3com like the plague. And if you want cisco reliability at less cost stay with procurve by HP. These are basically cisco switches made for HP.

Also can someone tell me what a modular ethernet switch is as well? my guess is its just a switch you can build on but that's a pure guess.

Thanks for anyhelp.
