TOPIC: Password recovery on a Cisco Router

Password recovery on a Cisco Router 10 years 9 months ago #12015

Hi, I am new here, I really hope I am posting in the proper forum...
I came across a Password recovery procedure on Cisco routers here on this site. My question is, should I perform a password recovery on a Cisco router, do I lose the existing config? Or do the password recovery procedures stated allow the user to simply change the l/p and enable pw while svaing the stored config?

Thank you

Hi ellamonroe, welcome to firewall.cx
You shouldn't lose your existing router config provided you follow the right procedure. In a nutshell, this is:
Interrupt boot sequence with CRTL+BREAK to enter rom monitor
Use Confreg to set config register to 0x2142
    Power cycle
    Enter Enable mode (no password)
copy startup config to running config
    set new password(s)
Check your interfaces and enter 'no shutdown' as necessary
copy running config to startup config
Reset the config register to 0x2102
    Power cycle
    The box is yours!
